Parma food landmarks: plan your café and salumeria stops

Parma's food stops split neatly in two: a museum out in the curing hills and a cluster of tiny counters in the centre where standing is the norm. The Museo del Prosciutto e dei Salumi in Langhirano takes about an hour and needs a weekday reservation before you travel south, while Pasticceria Cocconi, Pasticceria Pagani and Salumeria Garibaldi sit within walking distance of each other and are built for short visits of twenty to forty minutes.

Cocconi on Strada della Repubblica is the place for torta della Duchessa, eaten at the counter because the room is too small for a long sit and table service costs more. Pagani, two minutes from the Duomo, is known for the Maddalena, a Parma-only pastry; seats are scarce, so skip weekend and holiday mornings. At Salumeria Garibaldi, half shop and half kitchen, you can buy Prosciutto di Parma and aged Parmigiano over the counter or squeeze onto one of two small tables for anolini in brodo.

Admission to the ham museum is €5, with a guided visit €20 extra and a tasting €3, but note the Musei del Cibo winter closure from 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027, reopening 1 March 2027.

Reserving the ham museum and the smallest tables

Weekday opening at the Museo del Prosciutto e dei Salumi in Langhirano is by advance reservation only, so sort that before travelling south; admission is €5, with a guided visit €20 extra and a tasting €3. Booking is also recommended at Salumeria Garibaldi, where only two small tables serve anolini in brodo to solo diners and couples, and at Pasticceria Pagani, where seats are scarce and weekend or holiday mornings are best avoided.

Winter closure in the hills and Sunday afternoons in town

The Museo del Prosciutto e dei Salumi follows the Musei del Cibo network winter closure from 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027, reopening 1 March 2027; plan the Langhirano trip outside those months. In the centre, Pasticceria Cocconi closes for part of Sunday, so a weekday or Saturday counter stop is safer for torta della Duchessa.
